What is a contributor?

A contributor is a non-staff member of one of our communities, typically unpaid, but offering a distinct viewpoint or otherwise positively contributing to one or more of our products. They contribute second party content and maintain ownership of that content, but license the work to McNaughton under its contributor agreement. Although third party content can be submitted by a contributor, the submission of content is typically considered independently from contributorship and the contributor agreement may not apply.

A contributor to a given publication will have one of three site roles in WordPress:

  1. Contributor (pending review; cannot edit published posts)
  2. Author (direct publish; can edit own published posts)
  3. No Role For Site (in the case of third parties, the contributor may not have a WordPress account)

A contributor will fall into one of four categories:

  • Tier 0 - Contributors with the Author role who are expected to need access to WordPress backend tools (available via /wp-admin/)
  • Tier 1 - Contributors with the Author role who are expected to use the Contribution Form in combination with a secret "Publish URL"
  • Tier 2 - Contributors with the Contributor role who are expected to use the Contribution Form in combination with a secret "Publish URL"
  • Tier 3 - Contributors with no role necessary who are expected to use one of the third-party content tools such as "Submit a Press Release"
