.) Connect a USB backup hard drive to the Mac and turn on Time Machine. Backup the Mac to that drive
.) Unplug the backup drive and plug in a USB thumb drive with the new OS (10.10 or later.)
.) Reboot the Mac holding down the "Option" key.
.) A menu will appear and ask you which drive to boot. Select the OS thumb drive with the newer OS.
.) Once you get the the first window of the install screen, do NOT press continue. Instead, go to the menu up top and pick "Utilities." Select "Disk Utility."
.) Select the Mac's main drive and initialize it by clicking on Erase. Name it the same thing it was named before being erased.
.) Exit out of disk utility and go back to the install screen. Continue through the steps to install and select the drive you initialized as the destination when you get to that part. The install can take 20 - 45 minutes depending on the speed of the Mac.
.) When the install is complete, it will ask you if you want to transfer information from another Mac. Select the top option for transferring information from Time Machine.
.) Plug in the Time Machine backup you created earlier and select that drive
.) Select the correct Time Machine backup (there may be multiple.) The one with the most recent time and date is likely the correct one.
.) It will take between 15 and 45 minutes to transfer all the data depending on how much data was on the Mac before the upgrade.
.) Once the data has been restored, the login screen should look just as it did before the upgrade. Log into the users profile and go to the App Store to update the users OS with the latest updates. This may require several reboots. Continue with the updates until it says no more are available.
.) Next, update Chrome and Firefox to the latest versions. If the version of Firefox is too old, you may have to download a totally new version and replace the App in the Applications folder with the new one. If so, backup the users bookmarks to an html file first. Then restore them to the new version of Firefox. Chrome should always update in place so there is no need to worry about backing up bookmarks with Chrome.
.) Download and install the Legacy Java SE 6 from Apple at the following link:
https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1572?locale=en_US
This is needed for InDesign to function. If the above link does not work, just Google Legacy Java SE 6 and pick the result that is from Apple (support.apple.com.)
.) Start InDesign and make sure it works. Update InDesign using the "Updates.." option from the menus at the top of the screen. There may be no updates or just a single update listed as a "Migration tool." Just ignore that update since it does not work when selected.
.) Start Photoshop to make sure it works.
.) Open the users Mac Mail and it will ask you to migrate the mail. This can take between 5 and 30 minutes depending on the speed of the machine and the amount of mail the user has.
.) Once the mail is done migrating, go to Mail > Preferences > Viewing, and check the "Use classic layout" box.
.) Go to System Preferences, Mouse (or trackpad if it's a laptop) and UNCHECK the "Scroll direction: Natural" box at the top.
.) Reboot the machine to make sure everything boots well and the NAS reconnects to the Mac. If everything is fine, you are done.
